City based RTI activist Kanu Sukhadia complained to the election officer against the Gandhinagar police for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct by stopping Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal outside Gandhinagar, during his visit on March 7.
After accepting his complaint, Navsari district deputy election officer Mahesh Joshi forwarded it to the Gandhinagar collector for further inquiry and action.
On March 8, Sukhadia called the election officer on the toll free number and alleged that the Gandhinagar police had violated the Model Code by stopping Kejriwal from entering Gujarat capital on March 7.
"A day after Kejriwal was illegaly stopped on the outskirts of Gandhinagar, I formally lodged a complaint here. The police clearly violated constitutional rights of a citizen. What was so wrong in someone trying to meet the Chief Minister? Citizens have every right to roam freely and make representation to leaders," Sukhadia's complaint said.
Since the incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Gandhinagar collector, Joshi forwarded it to Gandhinagar collector.
"Ideally, Sukhadia should have lodged his complaint in Gandhinagar. When he filed it here, I took it and sent it to the Gandhinagar collector, who is also the district election officer," Joshi said.
