RTI reveals 32,000 passouts to get degrees from JU

Over 32,000 graduate and post-graduate students are waiting to get their degree certificates from Jammu University which includes students from 2006 to 2011 batch.
The University has not granted graduate and post-graduate certificates to 32,120 passouts, including 26,564 graduates and 5,556 post-graduates with delay ranging from 2006-07 to 2010-11, the information made public by the University under the Right to Information Act application.
"Total number of successful candidates who have not been issued their graduation degrees from session 2006-07 onwards are 26,564," the University states in response to the RTI.
Whereas, the total strength of post-graduate candidates eligible for degrees from session 2009 onwards are 2,256 of session 2010 and 3,300 of session 2011, the University added in its response.

Interestingly, a student who completed her bachelor's degree in medical sciences under the University of Jammu in 2008 has yet to receive her degree from the institution, though she has got the post-graduate degree certificate in Bio Technology from a different University.
"I have got my post-graduate degree, but I am still awaiting the degree certificate of my graduation, which I pursued under Jammu University," a student said

"I completed my graduation in commerce in 2009-2010, I applied for the degree certificate. But till now I haven't received my degree certificate from the University. I could not even apply for the Service Selection Commission (SSC) exam because of the unavailability of the degree," another student said.

When asked about the backlog, the University officials did not come up with a satisfactory answer.
"More than 30,000 students pass from University of Jammu every year, keeping that in mind these numbers are very less," Special Secretary to Vice Chancellor University of Jammu, Jai Kumar Sharma, told PTI.
However, when asked the inordinate delay in the award of degrees to the students, the official called up the department of Controller of Examinations and asked him to clear the backlog within one week.
He also directed the Controller Examinations to take corrective action against the concerned officials.
Meanwhile, when Controller of Examinations was asked about the delay, Prof Keshav Sharma, who has recently taken over the department, said, I assure you that every possible step would to be taken to ensure that the degrees are awarded to the students at the earliest.
