The remains of the centuries-old sea port from the Kadamba dynasty era near Panaji will be protected once the agencies like the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) complete their study of it, state minister Chandrakant Kavlekar told the Assembly on Thursday.
He was responding to a question tabled in the House by BJP MLA Francis Silveira, in whose constituency of St Andre, the port belonging to the Kadamba period is located.
"The government is aware of the existence of the Gopakpattana port wall of the Kadamba period located at Moita, in Agassaim village panchayat in St Andre constituency," Kavlekar, who is the Archives and Archeology Minister, said.
According to him, the remains of the port wall and associated archaeological heritage are being studied by the Directorate of Archives and Archaeology and other agencies like CSIR-NIO to establish its archaeological importance.
"Protection and development of the archaeological remains at Agassaim will be planned as per the outcome of the study," he added.
