"That extradition request is before the US now. I expect that there will be a ruling on that soon. I can't speak about the department of justice," Wendy Sherman, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, told CNN-IBN on the fourth anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack.

She said Indian investigators had been given "unprecedented access" to Headley and the US will continue to work with India to ensure New Delhi has whatever required in this process.

Sherman pointed out that Headley has been convicted in the US and was about to face sentencing.

"... He is going to pay for his role in this heinous act. I hope Indians understand the rule of law," she said.

On Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, Sherman said that the US authorities were in the process of bringing him and others to justice and noted the rewards for justice programme of the US government has put a 10-million-dollar bounty on his head.

"Reward for justice is just one tool. It's a tool to say if people can come forward with information that can lead to conviction...We continue our work with Indian authorities, we raise this issue with Pakistan," Sherman said.

On the execution of Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist of the Mumbai attack to have been caught alive, she said, "The US is very clear on that... We must do whatever we can to bring all of those responsible for such heinous act to justice."
