Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani Wednesday hailed the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in which it asked Pakistan to review the death sentence for Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav and granted consular access to him.

Rupani said it was a "big victory" for India.

"This is a day for happiness for India. We can consider this as the day of international justice. Out of sixteen judges, fifteen ruled in favour of Kulbhushan, so this is a big victory for India. Let us hope Kulbhushan returns to India soon," Rupani told reporters.

"The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi has adopted international strategy, pressure on Pakistan has increased. We know Abhinandan was sent back from Pakistan in just 24 hours. We have succeeded in isolating Pakistan in the international community," he said.

The ICJ Wednesday ruled that Pakistan must make an "effective review and reconsideration" of the conviction and death sentence of Kulbhushan Jadhav and grant him consular access.

Jadhav, 49, a retired Indian Navy officer, was sentenced to death by the Pakistani military court on charges of "espionage and terrorism" after a closed trial in April 2017.

A 16-member bench led by President of the Court Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf by 15-1 votes ordered an "effective review and reconsideration of the conviction and sentence of Mr Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav".
