Forex dealers said besides dollar selling by exporters, a higher opening in the domestic equity market also supported the rupee.
Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark index Sensex rose by 45.16 points, or 0.23 per cent, to 19,469.26 in opening trade today.
The rupee had tumbled by 33 paise to close at 54.47 against the US currency in the previous session on Friday, due to a firm dollar overseas.
