Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan were among the celebrities who exercised their franchise today and urged the electorate to step out and cast their vote.
Appealing to people to exercise their franchise, Tendulkar told reporters after casting his vote, "Every citizen must vote. Your opinion matters. I urge all to vote. It is really important for our nation."
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan said the citizens should vote if they want the city, state and country the way it should be.
"Everybody should come and vote. I am not the one to pass a judgement why people come out and do not come out to vote. People may have good enough reasons for not voting, although I personally feel that there is no good enough reason for not voting," said Khan, flashing his finger with inked vote mark.
'Dabangg' star Salman Khan urged people to elect their leader by voting today. "Choose your leader who works for you in the constituency, in the city and in the country. Prefer a leader who does social work instead of playing politics."
Veteran actor Prem Chopra said, "You cannot complain if you do not vote. So cast vote and chose your favourite candidate."
Actor-turned-politician and BJP MP Hema Malini emphasised that the state should be freed from corruption.
"The country is moving ahead. The state also needs to go ahead. There is a need of change in the state. Corruption should be destroyed and development is the need of the hour in the state."
Hema Malini's daughter Isha Deol described Maharashtra as a "safe state" but sought more security for women.
After voting, actress Sonali Bendre said the citizens needed better infrastructure in the metropolis. "We love the city.. Come on Mumbaikars step out and vote."
Veteran actor Anupam Kher said that he hopes for clean governance. "We are expecting a clean system. There are various areas that need concentration, including corruption, infrastructure, water for poor and education among others."
Marathi actor Subodh Bhave said, "I consider voting as my birth right and I am not doing a favour by exercising my franchise."
Another Marathi actress Mukta Barve, who cast her vote, said, "Voting is a way of citizen's participation in governance in deciding who will rule them in the coming years."
Noted lyricist and Rajya Sabha member Javed Akhtar, Chandigarh MP and actress Kirron Kher, Rajya Sabha member and veteran actor Jaya Bachchan too voted in the city.
