A SAD-BJP delegation today urged the Election Commission to immediately transfer senior police officers posted in Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency who allegedly had a role in registering "false" cases against some Akali leaders there.
The parties' request to the EC came as Congress today nominated its Punjab unit chief Sunil Jakhar as the party candidate for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-poll to be held on October 11.
The bypoll was necessitated due to the demise of BJP lawmaker Vinod Khanna in April.
Punjab BJP chief Vijap Sampla and other leaders from the two parties informed the EC of the "mala fide" intentions of the ruling Congress party to win the seat, a statement by the SAD said.
They told the EC that the Congress party was trying to "harass" SAD-BJP leaders by presurring the police, which has regiseterd "false" cases against 27 senior SAD leaders and several workers of the two parties, it said.
Accoding to the statement, the leaders urged the EC to transfet the senior police officers posted in Gurdaspur district.
