The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will launch a statewide drive to put pressure on the Punjab government to reduce its share of the taxes on petrol and diesel so as to reduce the price by at least Rs 10 per liter.

Announcing this here today, party spokesperson Harcharan Bains said a decision to this effect was at a meeting last night.

The meeting was chaired by the party president Sukhbir Singh Badal and attended by party patron Parkash Singh Badal. Bains said the party's district units will give memorandums to deputy commissioners and urge the Punjab government to ensure relief to the common people.

He said senior core committee members in each area will lead party workers in submitting the memoranda to the DCs.

If the state government and the Congress party are sincere in their concern for the people on petrol and diesel prices they must cut their tax to provide relief of at least Rs 10 per litre, said Bains, adding that the Shiromani Akali Dal will also seek a matching relief by the Centre on these fuels.
