Sagayam begins fourth round of inquiry into granite scam

IAS officer U Sgayam, appointed by Madras High Court to probe alleged illegal granite quarrying in the district, today began his fourth round of inquiry.
Sagayam, appointed by the court in September, had visited various sites and received petitions from public in the district since he began his work on December 3.
As the then Madurai District Collector, Sagayam had in May 2012 pegged loss to the state exchequer on account of irregularities in granite mining at Rs 16,000 crore over a period of years.
During the ongoing probe, he was shocked to find even hills which were housing archaeological sites with Brahmi scrips and Jain relics had been cut for mining granite.
He had had asked for list of the officials who were in charge of the respective area where the mining had taken place and began his fouth round of investigation today, officials said.
