The Sikkim government has decided to restrict the sale of 27 non-organic agricultural and horticultural commodities brought from outside to push consumption of only organic food by people, according to an official notification.
No date for enforcement of the ban has been mentioned specifically in notification, but it may come into force from March 31, the date which Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling had himself announced in the Assembly last week.
Vegetables such as maize and beans, fruits like banana and guava, spices such as ginger and green chilly are among the list of the 27 banned items.
"If there is any contravention to the notification, the commodities (banned) shall be liable to be seized and disposed of," the March 10 notification issued by Additional Chief Secretary, Home, SC Gupta, said.
The notification cited health concerns arising out of consumption of non-organic food as the reason behind banning 27 items from outside in the state of Sikkim.
The state was declared as an organic state in 2016.
