Sale of heritage havelis in two of the districts in the Shekhawati region and any construction or repair thereof which may harm its pristine look has been prohibited with immediate effect.
Divisional Commissioner of Jaipur has directed collectors of Sikar and Jhunjhunu districts to prohibit sale of such havelis in the Shekhawati region and any construction or repair which may harm the heritage look of havelis.
Divisional Commissioner Hanuman Singh Bhati said he has been informed about alleged illegal sale and purchase of historic havelis in the Shekhawati region, comprising those districts, by an organisation, following which he has directed the district collectors to make sure that no such activity takes place any further.
Shekhawati is located in north Rajasthan comprising districts like Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Churu and Nagaur. History has it that in the 18th and 19th centuries, Marwari merchants constructed these grand havelis in the region.
Areas like Fatehpur, Navalgarh, Mandava, Alsisar, Dundlod, Mukandgarh, Ramgarh have several such havelis which are frequented by tourists for their aesthetic charm.
He said the state government has already taken decision for conservation of such structures for the development of tourism.
