Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik today sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention for setting up waste water treatment plants along the country's coastline.
The globally acclaimed sand sculptor said he has made an appeal to the Prime Minister to take concrete steps in this regard through a letter as well as a Twitter post.
Pattnaik said he has drawn the attention of the PM to high levels of beach pollution at many places.
While sewage water flows into the sea directly, a large volume of non-degradable waste, including plastic materials, is also dumped in the sea water.
Therefore, there is an urgent need for establishment of treatment plants along coastlines, which will save the beaches and the seas from pollution, he said.
Pattnaik said he is happy that the five-day dharna staged by him against pollution at Banki Muhana beach in Puri yielded positive results.
Banki Muhana beach was cleaned up by Odisha government after Pattnaik sat on a hunger strike and dharna to press his demand. He was hospitalised during the agitation.
The state government has also announced that it will set up a sewage treatment plant at the beach, he said.
