A union of sanitation workers of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation today said they will rally behind the civic body in asking for the release of funds from the Delhi government, and would even gherao Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal if the demand was not met.
A federation of sanitation workers of NDMC today met North Delhi Mayor Ravinder Gupta and demanded from him that their due salaries be paid on time.
The Mayor told the members of the federation that despite meeting the chief minister, the deputy chief minister and even Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, no heed has been given to them and their demands in connection with the release of due funds, the civic body claimed.
The Mayor has said that nearly "Rs 2,000 crore is due" to the NDMC from Delhi government.
Sanitation workers have been up against the civic body for release of their salaries, but Gupta today told the members of the federation that it is "due to the irresponsible and careless attitude of the Delhi government that the sanitation workers and other employees of the corporation are compelled to suffer."
Representatives of Swatantra Mazdoor Vikas Sayunkta Morcha, under the leadership of the the Chairman of the union Sanjay Gahlot, after meeting Gupta, expressed their "solidarity and support to the Mayor," a senior official of the NDMC said.
Gupta yesterday also had said if the Delhi government fails to release the "due" funds of Rs 2,000 crore to them, then its employees will launch a stir against the Arvind Kejriwal dispensation.
The union also appealed to the Mayor that women sanitation workers be "exempted from working on main roads" from their safety point of view.
The Mayor, following this appeal, directed officials not to deploy women sanitation workers on main roads and asked them to be assigned duties only in inner roads, markets and colonies so that they don't face harassment situations.
