Sankalan upsets top seed Das

Top seed GM Debashis Das of Odisha suffered a shock defeat against Sankalan Bharati in the second round of the Siddha Chess For Youth at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra here today.
Sankalan, playing black, opted for his favourite Sicilian Dragon and broke open the queenside of his illustrious opponent.
Unable to defend against the onslaught of the combined forces of Sankalan, Das resigned on the 26th move.
IM Swayams Mishra, also from Odisha, won a minor piece ending against Akash Tiwari in a Queen's Indian defence while Prantik Roy had to sweat it out against Vishal Didwania before winning a pawn in the ending where he had a knight against a bishop.
IM Diptayan Ghosh scored a facile win against Dipanjan Chowdhury in a Catalan opening as he had total control of the central squares.
In other important results, Mitrabha Guha beat Sohini Ganguly, Deborshi Mukherjee beat Yudhajeet De, Chandreyee Hajra beat Sayan Bose and Arpita Mukherjee beat Sayantan Mukherjee.

In the U-10 girls' section, Sinthia Sarkar won her second game on the trot by beating Ashpriha Das while Souhardo Basak took his tally to two points by getting the better of Devansh Roy Choudhury in the U-10 boys section.
In the U-16 section, second seed Ayushman Majumdar went down to Disha Mundhra while top seed Rounak Pathak and fourth seed Basant Das had little difficulty in winning their respective games.
The seven-round Swiss league is being organised by Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy and Allsport Foundation.
