The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached cash of over Rs 74.47 lakh in connection with its money laundering probe into the sensational murder case of Kancheepuram temple manager Sankararaman.
The agency issued attachment and seize orders for the cash amount of Rs 74,47,700 recently. The cash was recovered by Tamil Nadu police from the premises of one of the accused in this case, Kathiravan, who was murdered here in 2012.
"The agency has identified the said cash amount as proceeds of crime of the murder that took place in 2004. The action has been undertaken under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act," the ED said.
Sankararaman, the manager of the famous Varadarajaperumal Temple in Kancheepuram, was hacked to death in the temple premises on the evening of September 3, 2004.
A Puducherry court had last year acquitted Kanchi Sankararacharyas Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi along with 21 other accused in this case.
The agency has registered a money laundering case after taking cognizance of the police FIR in this case.
