Two tenants and a relative were among six person detained by police in connection with the triple murder case in Sarai Rohilla here with police saying they were certain about the role of an "insider" in the crime.
A day after an elderly couple and their 30-year-old son were found murdered inside their residence in the north Delhi locality, police said the compass of suspicion rotates around half-a-dozen persons -- including two tenants, of which one had left the rented room last week, and a relative.
The six persons have been detained for questioning, said an official privy to the investigation.
"It is almost certain that the crime was carried out by an insider, but the motive can be ascertained only when the accused is identified," said DCP (North) Madhur Verma.
Police said they are probing the case from all possible angles, including personal rivalry and robbery.
The victims of the triple murder -- Chandu Lal (70), his wife Gullu Devi (65) and their son Rakesh (30) -- were found with their throats slit with a sharp object. Also, Rakesh's body was found with the limbs tied with a rope, said a senior police official.
According to police, the family occupied two single rooms -- one on the third floor and the other above that -- in the building in Sarai Basti locality near Shastri Nagar in Sarai Rohilla.
While Chandumal and Gullu Devi's bodies were found on the third floor, Rakesh's body was found on the fourth. The doors to both rooms were latched from outside, police said.
While the third floor room was found in disarray, objects in the fourth floor room appeared untouched, they said.
The bodies of the couple were found covered with quilts and the windows were left open by the assailants, who had also switched on the air cooler, possibly to delay the decomposition of the bodies, said the official.
Police said the victims had constructed a room on the fifth floor of the building, which they had rented out to two youths. One of them had left the room on September 20, while the other still lived there. Both were reported to be good friends of Rakesh, they said, adding that among the suspects is also a relative who had a dispute with Rakesh.
Police said it was quite possible that an insider had struck with a robbery motive.
Neighbours said they had heard nothing at all to suggest any kind of violence at the victims' house. The bodies were also not in a decomposed state, suggesting that they had been murdered in the last 24 hours.
The autopsy report is awaited, police said, adding that a case under Section 302 (murder) of IPC has been registered in this connection at Sarai Rohilla police station.
