Heavy rains over parts of western India in the past few days took a toll as swollen Savitri river swept away a road bridge in Maharashtra even though Assam witnessed further improvement in the flood situation today whereas Bihar recorded its 61st death.
Two persons died and over 20 were missing after two buses were swept away in Savitri waters when the British-era bridge on the Mumbai-Goa Highway near Mahad in Raigad collapsed.
Two state transport buses, with 18 passengers and four crew members, have gone missing after the bridge collapsed late last night.
"The primary reason seems to be the high pressure caused due to flooding of river Savitri because of heavy rains in catchment of Mahabaleshwar," Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
Mahabaleshwar, Mahad and Poladpur in Konkan have been experiencing very heavy showers in the last two days recording 410 mm, 222 mm and 184 mm rainfall respectively.
After heavy rainfall for over a week, the national capital had a sunny and sultry day with the mercury settling two notches above normal. The maximum temperature was recorded at 36 degrees Celsius while the minimum settled at 26.2.
