Saw rise in theft, dacoity on trains in 2013: Rlys

Cases of robbery and dacoity on trains witnessed a jump in 2013 over the year before, Rajya Sabha was told today.
There were 532 reported robberies in 2013 as compared to 448 in 2012 while the number of dacoities was at 41 in 2013 as against 39 in 2012, Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha said in a written reply.
The minister also said that there were 751 cases of theft on trains running from New Delhi this year till June as against 1,167 cases in 2013.
While 22 thefts were reported on AP Express, the GT Express saw 30 such incidents in the current year.
All cases of theft and dacoity are reported, registered and investigated by Government Railway Police in the state concerned.
Currently, 1,275 trains have RPF escorts with an additional 2,200 trains being secured by GRP.
Security helplines have been set up at the zonal control rooms for the aid of passengers.
