"We are happy to keep the promise of developing Sawantwadi station into a terminus within a year of the ground-breaking ceremony in June last year. The new terminus has been inaugurated on June 19 after completion of the first phase, built at a cost of Rs 11.42 crore," chief PRO of Konkan Railway Siddheshwar Telugu said today.
He said that in the last one year they developed facilities like a new platform with shed, a foot overbridge, two additional lines, tea stall, water posts, announcement system and CCTV surveillance.
A daily passenger traffic of nearly 950 commuters, in an area which in sparsely populated, is an adequate number, Telugu said, adding Konkan Railways is also running special trains on occasions like summer or winters vacations to cater to the extra need.
Work of phase-II is also in progress, which mainly comprises construction of train watering arrangement, terminal building and approach road, he said.
"The phase two will be completed at a total cost of Rs 9.05 crore," the chief PRO said.
