State Bank of India will start collecting all types of West Bengal government taxes online from its 1,100 branches in the state.
The bank would enable taxpayers to submit their taxes using the Government Receipts Portal System (GRIPS) developed by the National Informatics Centre, said Sunil Srivastava, Chief General Manager, SBI (Bengal Circle).
Payment of taxes through the GRIPS window would help in facilitating the taxpayers as they would be able to operate by sitting in their home or offices round-the-clock, or visiting the branches during working hours, said Binod Kumar, Commissioner, Commercial Taxes.
This unique initiative of the state finance department would help in better tax compliance, he added.
Besides SBI, 20 other public and private sector banks are also using the GRIPS mode.
On tax collection during the current fiscal, he said the target of Rs 40,000 crore revenue generation would be achieved.
