SC appoints volunteers to clean Kalkaji temple complex

In an unusual action, the Supreme Court today appointed a batch of volunteers comprising 28 persons for cleaning Kalkaji temple complex here on weekly basis starting from November 1.
A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and P C Pant passed the order after perusing an inspection report by a committee which has stated that cleanliness of the internal portion of the Kalkaji Mandir complex in south Delhi was not satisfactory.
"It is quite vivid that the cleanliness of the internal portion of the Kalkaji Mandir complex is not satisfactory and insanitation is prevailing inside the Mandir complex...
"Counsel appearing for the parties have agreed that it should be done by a batch of volunteers consisting of 28 persons and they will carry out the cleaning of the temple on weekly basis," the bench said, adding,"the first seven volunteers will do the cleaning work in the first week and, thereafter, the list shall continue chronologically in that regard."

The apex court, however, made it clear that volunteers who have been assigned to clean the temple complex "do not have any status".
"They should not harbour any ambition that because of their having any nexus or connection with the Kalkaji Temple they have been chosen, but because they have volunteered to do the cleaning work.
"While carrying out the cleaning work, the volunteers will maintain discipline and work with dedication in an unobtrusive manner. We may further clarify that they are working on voluntary basis and there cannot be remotely any expectation for wages," the bench said.
