The Supreme Court today asked the CBI to "expeditiously" probe into the mysterious disappearance of a 12-year-old girl from her residence in Bihar on the night of September 12 last year.
A bench of justices R M Lodha and Shiva Kirti Singh disposed of a PIL with the direction to CBI to conduct a speedy investigation in a "time-bound" manner in the case after it was told that Bihar government has already issued a notification recommending the probe by the agency.
The girl, a class VII student of St. Xavier Public School in Muzaffarpur in the state, had gone missing from her house located in Ghirnipokhar locality under Town police station area on September 18 last year.
The bench had, on January 7, issued notices to the Centre, Bihar government and its Director General of Police on the PIL filed by Abhishek Ranjan Kumar, a law student and others.
Prachi Mishra, the counsel for Kumar, has also filed some additional documents to support the plea that there was "serious lacunae" in the investigation carried out so far by the state police and the CID.
The PIl alleged the investigation has been poor as no statement of the complainants and other important witnesses have been recorded and moreover, no role has been ascribed to the three accused persons named in the charge sheet.
The police officials are contradicting themselves as on one hand they are asking for DNA sample and on the other hand the IO Amit Kumar has repeatedly assured even after the recovery of the skeleton that victim is alive and she will be brought back by police, it said.
The petitioners alleged they fear for their lives for raising the case of the girl.
