The Supreme Court today gave one last chance to state governments which have failed to file their affidavits on implementation of its direction on police reforms.
"Those states which have not responded so far will be given one last chance," a bench of justices G S Singhvi and V Gopala Gowda said while giving them two weeks to file the affidavits and posted the matter for hearing on September 17.
Attorney General G E Vahanvati, who is assisting the court as an amicus curiae in the matter, said 16 states have filed their response and Maharashtra government has filed the most detailed affidavit.
The bench had also directed all the states to file their responses on the problems faced by them in implementing the apex court's judgement on police reforms which was passed seven years ago.
The court had sent a clear message that the indifference of state governments on implementing its slew of directions on police reforms would not be tolerated.
The apex court had earlier expressed its annoyance with the approach of state governments to non-compliance of its directions on police reforms.
