It requires immense inner strength to render a judgement against a powerful person, Chief Justice J S Khehar today said, lauding Justice P C Ghose for demonstrating it while deciding the Jayalalithaa case.
"When you are doing a difficult matter, it takes a lot of inner strength which you must gather to render a judgement. When you deal with a very important person, a very powerful person, to be able to do what you want to do, requires more strength. And Justice Ghose demonstrated that strength when he delivered J Jayalalithaa's verdict. We used to tell him that he will be remembered for that judgement," the CJI said during a farewell function for the apex court judge who is to retire on May 27.
"The judgement which dealt with corporate, income tax and criminal law, all rolled into one, which finally decided issues layer by layer and recorded a conclusion, is a remarkable judgment, brother. You will be always remembered for this judgment," Justice Khehar said at a function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) at the apex court here.
Justice P C Ghose, who was part of a seven-judge bench which sentenced Justice C S Karnan today, observed that the controversial judge needed to be punished, irrespective of whether he was a judge, as "he is a citizen of India".
Justice Ghose will retire after a four year stint in the apex court which started on March 8, 2013.
The son of the former Calcutta Chief Justice late Justice Sambhu Chandra Ghose, was elevated as a Culcutta High Court judge in 1997.
The retiring judge was also associated with Ramakrishna Mission of Kolkata and influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.
After being transferred to Andhra Pradesh High Court, he became its Chief Justice on December 12, 2012.
