The Supreme Court today came down heavily on an advocate affliated to ruling BJP for filing multiple PILs asking him whether the party was financing him to indulge in "political activism" in the court.
Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, a Delhi BJP spokesperson, faced the ire of the bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur as soon as his PIL seeking nationwide prohibition of liquor came up for hearing with the court saying it would not encourage political activists taking judicial forum for political gain.
"Is this the job that BJP has given you? Is BJP financing you to carry campaign for the party in courts," the bench, also comprising Justice D Y Chandrachud, asked.
"You have become a professional PIL activist and we see you are everyday filing a PIL. Hardly there is a day when you don't file a PIL. Why don't you do professional work? Its your party which is in power at the Centre so why don't you approach the government with your grievances," the bench told him.
"We don't want to encourage practice of political activist trying to use the judicial forum for political gain," it said.
