A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud stayed the September 11 order of the High Court's Madurai bench asking the state government to allot land for establishment of Navodaya Vidyalayas.
The appeal against the High Court order was filed by the state government.
The high court had directed the state to permit establishment of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas after taking note of the written submission made by the Centre and the Navodaya Vidyalaya, saying there was no imposition of Hindi in the regional schools.
