The Supreme Court today ticked off jailed RJD leader Mohammed Shahabuddin after he sought bail in a nine-year-old kidnapping case, reminding him about his criminal record, including conviction in eight cases.
"How many cases are there against you? Perhaps there are 65 cases," a bench of justices H L Dattu and M Y Eqbal observed when senior advocate Rajiv Dhavan began to argue his petition.
The bench noted that he has already been convicted in eight cases.
"Not a case for bail, whatever you have to say," the bench further observed but agreed to issue notice to Bihar Government and sought its response within four weeks on his plea for lifting the stay on the trial of the case lodged in 2004.
The controversial former RJD MP from Siwan in Bihar had filed an appeal through advocate M Shoeb Alam challenging the Patna High Court order staying the proceedings in the case when the trial court had almost completed the hearing.
"We may ask the trial court to go ahead with the proceedings," the bench said while issuing notice to the state government.
