An alleged scam to the tune of Rs 20 lakh in social welfare department of Uttar Pradesh has been unearthed after a departmental inquiry.
According to the Chief Development Officer, Rampur, Alok Shekar Tiwari, the social welfare department gives a compensation of Rs 20,000 to the kin of those killed in accident.
Some people, taking advantage of the nexus of babus and touts withdrew the government funds earmarked to help the kin of accident victims, the CDO said.
"On the basis of about 100 fake death certificates, obtained by a chunk of touts, they succeeded in withdrawing a sum of Rs 20 lakh from government exchequer allegedly by greasing the palms of a district social welfare officer and his associate," Tiwari said.
A committee of senior district-level officials found substance in the complaint, the officer said, adding that municipal boards, blocks and tehsil authorities have denied issuing any such death certificates.
The officer said the case will soon be handed over to the police.
