School girl dies of burns after three week battle

After fighting a grim battle for three weeks in a Odisha hospital, 16-year-old Kanakdei who set herself on fire because her parents could not provide Rs 200 for her school and examination fees, died in the early hours today.
Kanakdei Bhatra, a student of Class X of a government high school in Nabarangpur district who had set herself ablaze on July 24, died at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here at 2:00 am, hospital sources said.
Her condition had deteriorated over the week after she suffered from septicaemia, they said.
She had been admitted with over 90 per cent burns and was being treated at the the hospital's plastic surgery department.
Kanakdei's body was handed over to her parents after post mortem.
Earlier, a 13-year-old girl of Ganjam district had taken her own life last month after her parents could not give her Rs 10 to buy a notebook and pencil.
Yesterday, A 23-year-old nursing college student of R Udaygiri in Kandhmal district hanged herself after she was denied stipend for higher studies for over one-and-a-half year.
