The girl, belonging to a tribal community in Peravoor in the district had returned from school yesterday and took the extreme step after finding that she had to cook meals, police said.
Police have recovered a suicide note stating that she was unable to do household work and continue her studies.
However, there were reports in a section of the media that the tenth standard student had ended her life unable to bear starvation.
The girl's parents work in a cashew farm and had gone for work at the time of the incident.
Only her paternal grandmother was at home.
