Union Minister for Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan today asked scientists to think "out of the box" and come up with technologies that can push the nation on the growth path, saying technologies which do not benefit the public are "of no use".
"We have developed new technologies during last 10 years which have not been put to use. If technologies are not in the interest of the public, then they are of no use," he said and asked the scientists to contribute with their knowledge and innovation to make Narendra Modid government's ambitious 'Make In India' campaign a huge success.
"Why after (scientist) C V Raman, we could not get another Nobel prize in science. We have so much of capability. There is a need to start fresh proactive process of brain storming. Even think out of the box," the Minister said, after holding a meeting with scientists of Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), a wing of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) here.
He asserted that Modi government gave the highest priority to professional ideas, capable of giving a push to country's growth.
The Minister claimed that the Centre was implementing schemes whereby Indian scientists working overseas could come back here and make significant contribution towards the nation's progress.
"Our government is implementing such schemes whereby those scientists working outside country can come back here. Our scientists are coming back (to India) and there is a trend which suggests this," he said.
With a view to make 'Make In India' campaign a great success, Indian scientists should develop such technologies which can be transferred to the industry for benefit of the public at an affordable cost, he said.
After holding a brain storming session with the industry, Harsh Vardhan asked CSIO scientists to suggest measures to the government for removing bottlenecks in pushing industrial growth.
He also dismissed suggestions that shortage of scientists was impacting work in different scientific labs in the country.
The Minister said that CSIR-CSIO had a head start by delivering in the complex and multi-disciplinary area of "Head Up Display (HUD)" technology.
HUD is a transparent display system, which allows viewing of data without requiring the viewer to look away from the main control, which is vital in combat aircraft.
"The Prime Minister is aware that we have arrived in the select club of those possessing HUD technology. I am glad to announce that CSIR-CSIO scientists are working on complex opto-mechatronic systems for advanced HUD and related systems," he said.
"Next generation HUD will result in significant improvement in intensity, resolution, better focus while simultaneously maintaining good image quality with budgetary constraints on weight, volume and foot print," he said.
Earlier, the Minister interacted with divisional heads and senior scientists of CSIO and representatives of industry, including Bharat Electronics Limited etc.
