The sealing of memorial dedicated to the 1971 war hero Lt Gen (retd) Hanut Singh by the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has triggered protests here.

During an anti-encroachment drive last Friday, the DMC had sealed the memorial which was part of an ashram situated on Rajpur Road.

Today, Randhir Singh Bhinder, the MLA from Vallabh Nagar in Rajasthan's Udaipur district, visited Dehradun and registered his protest against the action by the DMC.

During a press conference here, Bhinder said he has asked the state government to ensure that the memorial be opened immediately, calling the DMC action "illegal".

Bhinder said he met with chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on the issue who assured to look into the matter soon.

Hanut Singh, a recipient of the nation's second highest gallantry award, Maha Vir Chakra in the 1971 war, passed away in 2015. Following his demise, a memorial was dedicated to him in the ashram where he lived.
