CPI(M) today described as "mindless" the Railways' demolition drive in Shakur Basti area here, which allegedly claimed life of a child, saying the government should first secure lives of urban poor before talking about 'smart cities'.
The party claimed that the demolition drive has left slum dwellers "roofless" during winter.
Hitting out at the Railways, CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury asked, "How can authorities resort to mindless demolitions leading to the death of a child, leaving slum dwellers to suffer, roofless in winter?
"So much talk of 'smart cities' all the time. We need to first help secure lives (and livelihood) of urban poor," the Rajya Sabha member tweeted.
A controversy erupted after a baby died in the West Delhi slum pocket where a demolition drive was carried out by Railways yesterday.
While Railways said the child died at around 10 AM, two hours before the demolition drive began to clear several "fresh encroachments" yesterday, police said, prima facie, the baby died after a heap of clothes fell on the six-month-old.
However, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal slammed the Railways for undertaking the demolition drive when temperature saw a sharp drop.
