Security beefed up in Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya for I-Day

Security has been beefed up in Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya to ensure peaceful and violence free Independence day celebrations tomorrow.

Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia today said a multi-layer security arrangement has been put in place across parade grounds after receiving inputs of militant movements on the eve of Independence Day.

"We have got inputs of militant movements in few districts, mostly the border ones with other states. The district SPs have been asked to give organised multi-layered security system in and around the parade grounds in the state," Saikia told PTI here.

The police has identified the vulnerable areas and extra emphasis have been given on those locations, he added.

"Night dominations have been ensured by joint teams of security forces across these places. Apart from these, the regular patrolling have also been intensified," Saikia said.

Stating that proper security arrangements have been put in place across the state, the top cop informed that he is hopeful of a peaceful Independence Day celebrations this year.

"I have also spoken to my counterparts in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur on possible militant movements along the inter-state borders.

We have decided to carry out joint patrolling by forces of the states in the border districts on both sides," Saikia said.

The Independence Day will be centrally celebrated in Assam at the Veterinary College Playground, Khanapara in the state capital.

In Nagaland security has been beefed in the state for the peaceful celebration of the Independence Day tomorrow.

We have made adequate security arrangement throughout the state for the peaceful celebration, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Nagaland, R P Kikon told PTI today.

He said security along inter-state and Indo-Myanmar border, especially in Mon district sector have also been enhanced in coordination with the security forces to restrain the movement of armed underground cadres.

"We are not taking any risk, but sensitised all the Superintendent of Police of the districts and sounded high alert along the inter-state and international border to prevent any move to sabotage the celebrations," the ADGP said.

Meghalaya's officiating Director General of Police Raghavendra Awasthi said, "We have made necessary security arrangements for the peaceful celebration of Independence Day throughout the state."
