Security forces had to open "fire in the air" as a vehicle did not stop at a check-post after being signalled by the police in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir today.
"A vehicle being driven by a local did not stop when the security personnel at the check post at Kote Punnow area signalled it to stop," a police officer said.
After a chase, the driver was caught and three buffaloes were also recovered from his vehicle, a senior Army official said, adding that it seems that he was involved in smuggling of bovines.
The police officer said that one of the security personnel deployed at the check post fired in the air after getting suspicious as the vehicle did not halt and sped past.
"However, the vehicle did not stop, so a joint police and army team chased it before it was brought to a halt," he said.
He said that the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody for questioning.
Defence spokesman Jammu, Lt Col Manish Mehta said that a joint team of Army, Police and Mobile Patrol signalled a the vehicle to stop around in Kathua.
"It did not stop and crossed the check point on Rajbagh-Old Kathua-Samba road and alert security fired on its wheels after chasing it," spokesman said.
