DMK president M Karunanidhi today asked the Tamil Nadu government if it was true that farmers were being directed by some credit societies to pay back loans waived in 2006 and wanted the State to halt it if that was correct.
Karunanidhi cited reports that claimed that some Cooperative Credit Societies in Thanjavur District have been sending notices to farmers to repay loan with interest that was waived in 2006 during DMK's previous tenure.
As soon as the DMK assumed power, Rs. 7,000 crore farm loans owed by farmers to cooperative credit societies was waived benefitting 22,40,739 ryots, Karunanidhi said in a statement here.
Citing an example, the DMK chief said Nadu-Cauvery Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Society had sent a notice to Suseela, a Thiruvaiyaru based farmer seeking repayment for farm loan that was waived in 2006.
"If such (news) reports are true, Tamil Nadu government should intervene and appropriately advice the cooperative credit societies that demanding farmers to repay loans that were waived is wrong," he said.
