Shiv Sena today took a jibe at senior Kerala IPS officer Rishiraj Singh who had said that staring at a women for 14 seconds can land a man in jail, asking if someone who stared at a woman for 13 seconds would get benefit of doubt.
Stating that "there is a difference between staring and committing an atrocity," an editorial in Sena's mouthpiece 'Saamana' sought to know "if someone will get the benefit of doubt if he stares at a woman only for 13 seconds, instead of 14 seconds".
"Can it be said with certainty that there will be curbs on atrocities against women due to this 14-second rule," it said.
"This remark has also become the subject of derision in social media," it added.
In remarks which went viral on the social media last week, the Kerala Excise commissioner had said, "There are sections in law to jail a man for annoyingly staring at a woman for 14 seconds. Please use it (the provisions in the law), if it is the case."
Urging women to fight the hooligans disturbing them, he had also asked them to carry knives and chili spray in bags to protect themselves from such elements.
