A 65-year-old woman died of burn injuries after fire broke out in her third-floor flat in Grant Road area in south Mumbai early Wednesday morning, police said.

The incident took place at Nirmal Niwas building on August Kranti Road, said a police official.

The deceased was identified as Nargis Kanga, who lived alone.

Seeing flames and smoke coming out of the flat, neighbours alerted police around 4 AM.

Four vehicles of the fire brigade were rushed to the spot and the blaze was doused after five hours, by 9 AM, the official said.

The fire brigade personnel found Kanga inside and took her to the civic-run Nair hospital where she was declared dead before admission.

Kanga had sustained more than 90 per cent burn injuries, the official said.

All the furniture, electrical equipment, clothes and books inside the flat were charred, he said.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but fire brigade officials suspect that a short circuit caused it.

"We are looking for Kanga's relatives. So far nobody has approached us to claim her body," the official said.
