On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, nearly 300 senior citizens took out a candle light procession at Jantar Mantar here demanding a safe and secure life.
The event was organised by Confederation of Senior Citizens' Associations of Delhi (CSCAD) and HelpAge India.
A report by the NGO on elder abuse in India in 2014 claims 50 per cent of senior citizens in India experience abuse in some form. Within the tier-I cities surveyed, Delhi ranks the lowest (22 per cen) with Bengaluru on top (75 per cent).
Elders across cities were asked about abusers within their family. Daughters-in-law (61 per cent) and sons (59 per cent) emerged as the top most perpetrators.
With instances of abuse against the elderly "increasing", the NGO working for the disadvantaged senior citizens, yesterday launched an app -- 'Save Our Seniors'.
The app seeks to provide a one-click emergency service to senior citizens in need.
In case of emergencies, it will connect them to the local police station, hospital or old-age home.
