A senior journalist was today shot dead by unknown gunmen in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region, police said.
Zaman Mehsud, who was associated with an Urdu daily, was riding a motorcycle in Dibra area of Tank district Khyber Pakthunkhwa bordering South Waziristan Agency when he was attacked by the gunmen, police said.
Mehsud was shot five times. The journalist was critically injured in the firing, and was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Dera Ismail Khan where he succumbed to his wounds, it said
Mehsud had served as the president and secretary general of the Tribal Union of Journalists. He was also a member of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
Journalists condemned the murder and demanded arrest of those involved.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, while police said the motive was unclear.
