"Sensationalism has taken over sensitive reporting," the Supreme Court today said but made it clear that any attempt to regulate the media has to come from "within".
A bench headed by justices R M Lodha and A K Patnaik was rsponding to the submissions of senior advocate K K Venugopal that a judicial observation was needed to sensitize certain section of the press which has indulged in "scandulous' reporting in the case related to Kerala's famous Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
"I am of the firm view that it (regulation) has to come from within. If the situation becomes anarchic, then there may be a demand for a law," the bench said.
"Our power is more respected if we use it with restraint. It is the restraint that enhances our power," the bench said and asked amicus curiae and senior advocate Gopal Subramanian to file an application before it.
During the hearing Venugopal, appearing for Marthanda Varma of Travancore Royal family, referred to certain media reports saying that wrong facts have been attributed to the royal family and the amicus in the case.
Meanwhile, the court asked Venugopal to respond to the reports filed by Gopal Subramanian in the case and fixed the mater for further hearing on September 30.

It had said the amount for strengthening the vaults, which is estimated to cost Rs 80 lakh, would be paid jointly by the state government and the temple management.
It said the two third of the cost would be paid by the state and the rest would be paid by the management.
The temple has six vaults, most of which are underground and are filled with priceless articles. During preparation of its inventory recently by the apex court-appointed panel, five of these vaults were opened, leaving out one chamber, called 'vault B'.
