The 30-share index, which had lost 830.80 points in the previous five sessions, recovered by 55.75 points, or 0.19 per cent, to 28,906.72.
Heavy buying in stocks of capital goods, consumer durables, IT, realty and oil & gas sectors, led the recovery.
On similar lines, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty went up by 10.25 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 8,721.95.
Brokers said emergence of buying at prevailing lower levels in bluechips helped key indices to trade in positive zone.
Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down by 0.21 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei was up by 0.58 per cent in early trade today.
The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 1.20 per cent higher in yesterday's trade.
