Terming rising cases of violence against women as "the bane of society", NCP MP Supriya Sule today said domestic violence needs to be curbed by sensitising people against the practice.
"Everyday, I get around a dozen complaints of domestic violence. Our activists have taken an initiative to tackle such cases," Sule, Rajya Sabha member and daughter of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, told PTI here.
The NCP leader, who has been spearheading the 'Yashaswini' movement for women's empowerment, said there was a need to link efforts made by police to curb such incidents to the work being done by NGOs and other organisations against domestic violence.
"The Aurangabad police has done good work in this area and helped bring down incidents of domestic violence. This model could be followed elsewhere," she said.
"We are planning to involve youth and students wings of the party in the movement against domestic violence," Sule said.
Incidents of female foeticide still remained an area of concern, Sule said. "This is a social issue. The government can't do everything," she said.
A training programme was organised for 'Yashaswini' movement members at Nashik and over 1,500 women, many of them part of self-help groups in the state, participated in the event, she said.
