The remission has been carried out in commemoration of the Republic Day, an official statement said today.
"The Government of Assam in commemoration of Republic Day 2013 remitted the sentences against certain categories of prisoners who have been convicted by the Courts other than court Martial having original jurisdiction in the state of Assam and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment," the statement said.
It, however, did not state the number of prisoners who are to benefit from the remission.
"The scale of remission of sentence for prisoners with sentence above one year will be remitted for 30 days, with sentence above six months to one year will be remitted for 15 days, with sentence above three months to six months will be remitted for 10 days and those with sentence above one month to three months will be remitted for five days," it added.
The remission order came into effect from January 26.
