VHP working president Pravin Togadia today requested the TRS government to celebrate September 17 as 'Telangana Liberation Day' to commemorate the region's liberation from the Nizam rule.
"I request the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to take a decision to officially celebrate September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day," Togadia said here tonight.
There have been demands, particularly from BJP, to declare September 17 as the Telangana Liberation Day because it was on September 17, 1948 that the region got freedom from the Nizam's rule, 13 months after India became independent.
Earlier, delivering a talk on 'Hyderabad Liberation Day' and 'Hindu Unity', Togadia alleged that Nizam "made all attempts" to keep Hyderabad as a separate independent Muslim state.
Telangana, Marathwada and some districts in Karnataka were a part of erstwhile Hyderabad state of Nizams during the British rule.
