Ashdullah Hosen Bux (74) had eating problems and was diagnosed with esophagus cancer, with other multiple health problems and was given chemo radiation three times and asked to come to Gem Hospital here as there was no improvement, hospital chairman Dr C Palanivelu told reporters here today.
Thoracolaparoscopic minimally invasive esophagectomy, introduced by Gem hospital was the primary treatment for the disease, he said.
During the six hour surgery, the 15 cm cancerous part of the esophagus was removed through holes in the chest and the stomach was made new esophagus to bridge the gap, he said.
Bux, present at the press meet, said he now felt very comfortable and could not believe that he would be cured.
Heart burn due to gastroesophageal reflux caused esophagitis, which in turn caused cancer in esophagus in due course and cancer esophagus was increasing due to lifestyle changes and obesity, Palanivelu said.
