Train services of South Eastern Railway to Howrah station remained affected today as water on the railway tracks did not recede even two days after heavy rains that lashed the city and adjoining Howrah district.
Several mail/express trains and EMU locals were cancelled or short-terminated owing to the waterlogging of the tracks at Tikiapara and Howrah stations, one of the busiest terminal stations in the country.
"Hopefully by tonight the water will recede if there is no further rain. If so it will be possible to resume normal services from tomorrow," SER spokesperson Sanjoy Ghosh told PTI here.
SER had to cancel at least 35 pairs of EMU services as tracks remained inundated between Howrah and Tikiapara stations.
Four express and passenger trains were also cancelled, while most of its mail/express services were short-terminated at and originated from Santragachi station.
The few mail/express trains which are originating from Howrah will stop at Santragachi for the convenience of passengers, Ghosh said.

"As several areas, around the tracks between Howrah station and Tikiapara, are still under water, it is taking time for the water on the tracks to recede," the SER spokesperson said.
These areas are managed by Howrah Municipal Corporation and efforts are on to pump the water into Hooghly river.
Train services of Eastern Railway were near normal after it remained affected for two days following Monday's heavy downpour that threw normal life out of gear in Kolkata, Howrah and several other south Bengal districts.
"Services in Howrah, Sealdah and other divisions of Eastern Railway are almost normal today," ER spokesperson R N Mahapatra said.
