Services of the heritage Nilgiri Mountain Rail (NMR) were cancelled for two days from today following heavy landslide on the track at two different places.
The train, scheduled to depart from Mettupalayam in the district at 7.10 AM was stopped from its onward journey following information that large boulders had fallen on the Mettupalayam-Kallar and Barliar-Coonoor sectors, railway sources said.
Senior officials from Salem division, along with workers are at work to clear the debris, which would take at least 24 to 36 hours, they said.
Considering this, services were cancelled for two days.
Passengers booked for Coonoor and the hill station of Udhagamandala, were sent by buses to these destinations.
The more than a century-old Nilgiris Mountain Railway train was declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
It is a star attraction among tourists as it climbs the mountain offering a visual treat of picturesque valleys and reaches Udhagamandalam in about four hours.
