Several IEDs recovered in Upper Assam

A number of Improvised Explosive Device (IED), apparently planted by the anti-talk faction ULFA-I in the run-up to Independence Day, have been recovered from places across upper Assam by the army and police, a senior police officer said today.
Based on a secret information regarding planting of an IED in the district by ULFA(I), an operation was launched led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Namrup) Partha Bijoy Dutta at Kamarchuk gaon, under Barbam outpost, the officer said in Dibrugarh.
One ULFA linkman, Lakhyajit Gogoi, was apprehended, he said.
After being nabbed, Lakhyajit led the police to an IED weighing three-kg and confessed that the bomb was provided by ULFA-Independent militant Pradip Asom alias Akon to plant it for explosion in any crowded market place of Naharkatia town.
Another IED was recovered at Old Dibrugarh Railway station last night, he said.
In Charaido district, based on secret information a joint operation was launched by police, army and CRPF team and recovered a 2.5-KG IED from Bahalhabi area under Sapekhati PS as revealed by ULFA linkman Shankar Gohain, another police official said.
On further questioning Lakhyajit also revealed that two other IEDs were with two persons - Shankar Gohain and Nirab Saikia alias Bhaijan - for planting at Moranhat and Sonari towns in Charaido district, he added.
Two more ULFA Linkmen Nirab Saikia alias Nityajit alias Bhaijan and Haren Rajkonwar alias Tikong were also apprehended and their interrogation is on, the official said.
In Tinsukia district, during a joint police and army operation an ULFA cadre, Anupam alias Suchan Asom, was nabbed at Hijugeri under Tinsukia Police Station area.
During interrogation, Anupam revealed that he had planted an IED with remote sensor that can be blasted by a mobile SIM card in Tinsukia railway station, SP M J Mahanta said.
The IED weighing 2-kg was recovered from near a railway line of platform No 1 of new Tinsukia railway station, Mahanta said, adding the explosive was safely defused by Army's bomb disposal squad.
Nineteen-year old Anupam who had joined the ULFA this year told the security forces that he was sent for the task by ULFA-I Secretary Arunoday Dohotia, the SP added.
